A 35-year-old woman of Indian origin will be reunited with her adoptive parents in France for Christmas thanks to Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi who intervened to facilitate her travel after some hiccups.
The marketing manager, working in Chennai since 2014, had written to Gandhi seeking her help to get an NOC from Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) required as an essential document to prove her Indian origins before being granted an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status.
In her letter she had also expressed that she wanted to celebrate Christmas with her family in France but she wasn't sure whether she would be able to go out of India as she only had a Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card but not an OCI card, according to a source.
However, procuring the NOC was difficult as she was adopted over three decades ago in 1982 at the age of 1 year and 7 years before the regulatory body for adoption itself came into existence.
But Gandhi's staff got in touch with the local Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and requested them to proceed ahead with the formalities.
Gandhi tweeted, "I instructed CARA to look for the necessary documents and got her the NOC for her OCI. She is flying to her parents today itself. I wish her and her parents a Merry Christmas.
