Union Women and Child Welfare Minister Maneka Gandhi got a first-hand experience of food being served under the mid-day meal scheme to tackle child malnourishment after she tasted half-boiled rice and sour kadhi in Madhya Pradesh.
"At one place, I found the rice half boiled and sour kadhi in the midday meal," Maneka, who visit childcare centres and inspected the mid-day meal scheme here and in Raisen district of MP, told reporters.
However, she quickly added that she found the mid-day meal "fantastic" at other places.
"I want good food in children's stomach," she said.
Maneka claimed that the number of malnourished kids is coming down in the country, especially in Madhya Pradesh, which is worst affected by child malnourishment.
To a query about junk food intake by children which is detrimental to their health, she said that a committee of experts has suggested measures in this direction, as per which health and HRD ministries have been working, adding that states have been advised accordingly.
Asked to rate Madhya Pradesh in implementing schemes run by ministry, she said, "I give MP ten out of ten marks".
She said that some schemes in Madhya Pradesh for women and child welfare are "extraordinary", adding that she wants such schemes to be replicated across India.
