Police said the bandh was called by National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM) as protest against merger of Manipur with the Indian Union allegedly under pressure in 1949.
Inter-state and inter-districts bus, mini bus, taxi and auto-rickwhow services were hit in the bandh. All markets, shops and business establishments, hotels, motels and entertainment houses remained closed during the day, the police said.
Also closed were educational institutions - government and private run-schools, colleges and university, the police said.
Attendance in government and public undertaking offices was very thin, official sources said.
