Normal life in Manipur remained paralysed for the second day today owing to 48-hour general strike demanding implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to regulate the influx of non-domiciles into the state.
Like yesterday, vehicles kept off the road, while shops, markets and business establishments were closed.
Protesters and police clashed here but there were no reports of any casualties.
Police said the protesters blocked the roads to the capital complex by piling metal pipes and placing boulders and felled trees.
They also burnt tyres to prevent movement of people and vehicles, police said.
Sit-ins were staged in various places of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts where slogans like "Implement inner line permit in Manipur", "Release all the arrested students" were heard, police added.
The strike was also called to press for action against police personnel who allegedly committed brutality on student protesters.
Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) students wing has been pressing for inner line permit system in the state.
The movement for implementation of inner line permit has been rocking Manipur since July 8 when a student protester was killed in police firing.
