Manjit Singh GK was today unanimously elected as the new president of the cash-rich Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) after Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) swept the polls held last month.
He took over from Paramjit Singh Sarna, whose party was ousted in the January 27 polls.
President of the SAD(B)'s Delhi unit, Manjit Singh assumed the charge of the new office along with four other office bearers and 10 Executive Committee members, in the presence of Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, who is ex-officio member of the committee.
While Ravinder Singh Khurana is the new Senior Vice President, Dhanwant Singh is the new Vice President and Manjit Singh Sirsa, SAD's youth wing president of Delhi, is the new General Secretary of the DSGMC. He had defeated Sarna in the polls. Harwant Singh Kalra is the new Joint Secretary of the Committee.
The names of the new Committee were earlier cleared by SAD chief Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is the deputy chief minister.
Former DSGMC chief Avtar Singh Hit proposed GK's name and was supported by senior member Onkar Singh Thapar.
SAD (B) wrested control of the DSGMC after a gap of over 10 years, defeating the ruling Congress-backed dispensation. SAD (Badal), supported by BJP, bagged 37 out of 46 seats while Congress-backed SAD (Delhi) claimed eight seats against its current strength of 27 seats.
Hit, who was DSGMC president from 2000 to 2002 and Delhi- unit president of the SAD (B) for many years, was in the race for the top post but failed to garner support of his party leaders.
