People's Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Singh Badal today ruled out his party's merger with the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, saying it was a "sinking ship".
"There is no question of the party's merger into the Congress, which has lost mass base in the country as well as in Punjab.... It is a sinking ship," Manpreet, who floated the PPP following his differences with his uncle and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, said.
Rumours of PPP merging with the Congress started floating around the state after an indication by former Chief Minister and Congress leader Amarinder Singh.
In order to topple the SAD-BJP combine, there is a strong need for Sanjha Morcha comprising the Left and some splinter outfits of Akali Dal and PPP, Amarinder had said.
Political circles in Punjab were agog that Manpreet is likely to be fielded against his sister-in-law and MP from Bathinda Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
Meanwhile, Manpreet cleared that at present the Sanjha Morcha was in its initial stage.
