"System of scavenging and dry toilets after so many years of independence was a cause of concern," said Wasnik, Union minister for Social Justice and Empowerment.
During a meeting to review a campaign to abolish system of dry toilets and scavenging, he said that officers should work dedicatedly to implement Nirmal Bharat campaign in Uttar Pradesh.
"Several rehabilitation schemes were launched in the past, but positive results were not achieved," he said.
"An awareness campaign should be launched to create awareness for identification of manual scavengers and insanitary latrines," he said.
Wasnik said,"Centre was considering to hike the loan amount and subsidy for rehabilitation of scavengers."
The minister claimed no demand was made by the state for the past three years for assistance to children of people involved in scavenging.

To make the national campaign successful the Centre was going to frame stringent law, the minister said.
Talking on the occasion, UP family welfare minister Awadhesh Prasad said the government was committed to abolish the tradition of manual scavenging.
Earlier, addressing party workers at UPPCC headquarters, Wasnik said that on the basis of information received through census, the Centre has written letter to all chief ministers appealing them to abolish tradition of manual scavenging.
In reply to a question, Wasnik said Congress was emerging stronger as compared in the state.
"To strengthen the organisation there was a need to connect all its units," the Congress leader said.
