Martyrs' memorial in Goa's Patradevi village to don new look

The martyrs' memorial at Patradevi village in north Goa, which was inaugurated in 1985 by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is all set for a revamp.
"Goa government has decided to demolish the present memorial and work on a new one at the same place depicting the history of Goa's liberation struggle," Siddharth Kuncolienkar, vice-chairman of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) said.
GSIDC, which will build the new memorial, has already acquired the preliminary architectural plans for it, he said.
The memorial is located at stone's throw distance from Maharashtra-Goa border. The spot has historical importance as in 1955, 31 satyagrahis, who were trying to enter Goa, were killed by Portuguese soldiers here. Goa was liberated on December 19, 1961.

"Patradevi memorial being at the entrance of the state is an important place. The place would be designed in a manner that it will give a glimpse of Goa's liberation struggle," Kuncolienkar said, adding it will be inaugurated on December 19.
