Maternal mortality rate, a major challenge in Assam

According to the Annual Health Survey conducted by Registrar General and Census Commissioner, the ratio for 1 lakh births was 381 in Assam while in the Hills and Barak Valley it was 342, Commissioner of Hills and Barak Valley Dr Mohammed Ariz Ahmed said at a meeting here last night.

The state reported a sex ratio of 925 girls to 1000 boys. Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj reported a sex ratio of 929, 810 and 913 respectively, Commissioner of Hills and Barak Valley Dr Mohammed Ariz Ahmed said at a meeting here last night.

He also expressed concern over reluctance of women to enrol their names in the electoral process as he said that out of 1031 females, 974 have their names in the electoral rolls.

The commissioner appealed to the people to come forward and register their names in the electoral process.

On effective literacy rates, Dr Ahmed said the male literacy rate was 84.60 per cent and female literacy rate 72.70 per cent with Karimganj district reporting a dismal female literacy rate of 69.20 per cent.

He said the Right to Education Act was yet to be implemented properly with 13 per cent children in the state yet to be enrolled in schools.

In Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi, the rates of children of 6 to 17 years of age currently attending schools are respectively 85.30, 83.30 and 86.70 per cent.

On the rate of child marriage, he said that 11.40 per cent of rural girls in the state got married before attaining 18 years of age while urban areas in Cachar reported 8 per cent child marriages which he termed as
