Marches were organised by joint committee of central trade unions here and at other districts.
A public meeting was held in the evening which was addressed by senior leaders of unions like CITU and AITUC.
The INTUC also organised May Day programmes throughout the state.
The unity of working classes was more relevant now than ever before to defend their hard-earned rights like job security, eight hour working time and minimum wages, trade union leaders said during their speeches.
