Ruling BJP which suffered a setback in the MCD bypolls for 13 wards finishing behind AAP and Congress, however, managed to garner maximum vote share of over 34 per cent, among the contesting parties.
The share, however, this year saw a fall of 6.88 per cent. For these wards in 2012 MCD elections, BJP had secured 40.99 per cent, the highest share that year as well, according to Delhi State Election Commission.
"BJP polled a total of 1,04,621 votes comprising 34.11 per cent of the total number of people who exercised their franchise," a Delhi State Election Commission official said.
The results of the by-polls to 13 wards held on May 15 were announced today. The contest was being billed as a litmus test for AAP, BJP and Congress ahead of the 2017 civic polls.
Debutant AAP, which bagged five seats, had a vote share of 29.93 per cent while Congress got 24.87 per cent votes, staging a comeback with four wins. One Independent candidate from Bhati ward emerged victorious while 2,332 voters opted for NOTA.
Congress in 2012 MCD polls had a share of 27.71 per cent for the 13 wards.
BJP also finished second in eight wards from where AAP or Congress candidates won. The party, which has been ruling the MCD for nearly a decade, had won 7 out of the 13 wards in 2012 MCD elections. Today it won from Wazirpur, Nawada and Shalimar Bagh (North) wards.
Incidentally, in the 2015 Delhi Assembly polls, BJP had polled 32.2 per cent votes.
