Agitating sanitation workers of the municipal corporation here will abstain from work in a one-day symbolic strike on December 28, in support of their demands concerning salary, arrears and health card.
"The sanitation workers under the three municipal corporations will be on strike on December 28 since all means of protest have failed to evoke any positive response from the corporation officials and Delhi government," claimed Sanjay Gehlot, president of Swatantra Mazdoor Vikas Samyukt Morcha.
The sanitation workers under the banner of the Samyukt Morcha have been on a relay hunger strike for past 15 days, at Jantar Mantar.
"We do not want the people of Delhi to face problems due to strike but we are forced to do so due to stubbornness of the government," he said.
On the day of strike, large number of sanitation workers and other class IV employees of municipal corporations will assemble at Jantar Mantar and torch an effigy of the Chief Minister as a mark of protest.
The sanitation workers of East Delhi Municipal Corporation had gone on strike demanding regular payment of salaries, arrears, and health cards, on October 23.
The strike continued for nearly a week and then petered out following a Delhi High Court order on October 28 directing Delhi Police to ensure that the strikers did not prevent municipal corporation staff from lifting dumped garbage.
