"We are in the process of setting up a health university. It will either be a deemed or an autonomous varsity," Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health) Manisha Mhaiskar said.
A study group in this regard has been constituted under the chairmanship of KEM hospital dean Dr Sandhya Kamat which will study various requirements for a health university.
"Looking at the health care needs of the people living in city and suburbs in future, the university will prove beneficial," she said.
Mhaiskar also claimed that MCGM has adequate infrastructure to set up its own university.
"All our peripheral hospitals will be linked with the major hospitals run by the civic-body," she added.
The study group, which was set up last week, would submit its report to the MCGM by the end of this month.
