Assam Governor J B Patnaik, in his address to the assembly here on the opening day of the budget session today said, anti-trafficking units have been set up in different districts of the state and women cells in police stations have been made functional.
For the protection of women and girls, an all-women platoon 'Virangana' in the Assam Police has been formed, he said adding "My government has given special emphasis on the protection of rights of children and women in the project 'Vision for Women and Children'," he added.
"There was a drop of 99 points of MMR during the NRHM period which is the highest drop in the country. Infant mortality rate was brought down to 55 from 68 in 2005," he said.
Informing that institutional delivery was 73.2 per cent in the state, Patnaik said to ensure post-partum care and stay in hospital up to 48 hours after delivery, the 'Mamata Kit' was distributed to 6.15 lakh beneficiaries till December 2012.
Altogether 2486 gram panchayat-level multipurpose women cooperatives had also been set up for providing credit to small and marginal entrepreneurs.
