The state government has initiated steps to set up 44 points to sell pure fuel for the mechanised country boats in Canning-Sunderbans area, West Bengal Minister of State in charge of Sunderbans Development Manturam Pakhira said today.
Pakhira said this was necessitated due to the findings that use of mixed adulterated oil (kantatel) in the mechanised boats (bhatbhati) was causing river pollution in the Sagar area and a consequent dip in fish catch including succulent Hilsa by the trawlers.
The pure fuel points will be set up along the strecth of Canning-Sunderbans where the river traffic plied.
Pakhira was addressing a Hilsa Utsav organised by West Bengal United Fishermen's Association here in South 24 Parganas district.
An association spokesman said of the estimated five lakh mt annual Hilsa production in the world, Bangladesh had a share of around 60 per cent followed by about 40 per cent of West Bengal.
