Union minister Venkaiah Naidu today lamented that corruption is "spreading" in the journalist fraternity and that the profession is losing "values" like politics even as he expressed the need for "fearless" media.
"Destructive issues are occupying a prominent space in the media instead of constructive or developmental topics. Nowadays political values are diminishing. Political ideology is decreasing while opportunism is on the rise," Naidu said.
"Along with politics, journalism is also losing its values. It is not to criticise any individual channel or person, the standards in journalism, that courage and fearlessness and fighting nature is on decreasing side," the Urban Development Minister said.
He was speaking at a commemorative meeting of journalist late Raghramaiah here.
"Loyalty (towards individuals or parties) is increasing. Compromising nature is developing among the journalist community. We see the corruption that is there in some political sections is now spreading to journalist community also (sic)," he said.
Naidu said that media should become unbiased and not focus on sensationalism.
