Medical student hit by car on Marine Drive dies at JJ hospital

A 27-year-old medical student, who was knocked down last week by a speeding car on Marine Drive, died today at the state-run JJ Hospital, police said.

Dipali Lahamate, a dental student of Nair hospital and Dental College died at around 5:15pm, officials informed.

Lahamate, who hails from Aurangabad, was hit by a speeding car around 3:30 pm on March 24 near Taraporewala Aquarium and went into coma due to severe brain injuries, police said.

She was on her way to her brother Abhinay's MBBS convocation ceremony when the incident happened, police said.

A motorist gave chase and apprehended the car's driver, Shikha Jhaveri, a teacher and a resident of Napean Sea Road in south Mumbai.

Jhaveri told police that she drove on after the incident as she had panicked.

"Jhaveri was arrested under sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC. Now we have added section 304 A (causing death by negligence) as well," Vilas Gangawane, Senior Inspector of Marine Drive police said.

Officials said that Lahamate's body would be handed over to her family after post mortem.
