Meet on root crops

: The Central Tuber Crops Research Institute here is conducting a four-day international conference here from July 9.
The event, being organised in collaboration with the Indian Society for Root Crops (ISRC), will focus on the theme "Tropical Roots and Tubers for Sustainable Livelihood under Changing Agro-cimate.
The conference will deliberate on the role of tropical tuber crops for food and livelihood security of millions of people of tropical world under changing agro-climate, S K Chakrabarti, Director, CTCRI, told a press meet here today.
"Tuber crops were neglected crops till some time back. But, now, they have been accepted as crops which can overcome climatic changes," he said.
More than 250 agricultural experts from India and other countries like USA, Colombia, Pery, China, Switzerland, Germany, Nigeria, Thailand, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are expected to participate in the event, he said.
"It is expected that the conference will be making important recommendations having significant influence on research, development and policy implications of tropical tuber crops world over in the coming years," he said.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the event in which Sashi Tharoor, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, K P Mohanan, state Minister for Agriculture and Dr S Ayyappan, secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR, New Delhi will also participate, he added.
