Meghalaya asked NHAI to adopt slope-stabilisation : CM

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the state government has directed the NHAI to adopt slope-stabilization as part of road safety measures along the four-lane Shillong-Guwahati National Highway before completion certificate is given.
"The state government had insisted some more measures which include the need for slope stabilization of the road,and the NHAI has assured to take up the matter," the chief minister told the Assembly today.
"A Road Safety Auditing (RSA) is on and based on the report of the RSA, the Completion Certificate (CC) will be given," he said.
According to the chief minister, there has been two meetings held at the level of the Chief Minister on safety of roads especially the Guwahati-Shillong road.
He admitted that the slopes in certain stretches still pose a danger to road users which could lead to landslide.
Earlier, Opposition United Democratic Party legislator Jemino Mawthoh expressed concern on the frequent mudslide along the national highway which led to loss of lives besides leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.

PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar informed the House that the only remaining portion of the highway is at Umsning where a By-pass will be built for a length of 5.27 Km.
"The land acquistion for the rest portion has recently been completed and the latest position in as far as physical progress of work for the whole project is 91 per cent," Dhar said.
On the status of land acquisition for the remaining portion of the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura National Highway, the chief minister said, "This case related to land acquisition is being review from time to time by the Chief Secretary.
