A Meghalaya legislator today sought Central intervention and a CBI probe into the law and order situation arising out of rising militancy in the state's Garo Hills regions, blaming the Congress government for gross "mismanagement".
"The law and order situation arising out of growing militancy problem has affected the daily lives of the people residing in the five districts of Garo Hills," Independent legislator Saleng A Sangma said in a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
He said the problem had crossed all limits and people, including government officials, bank employees, political workers and traders have been victims of militancy.
Saleng did not get a Congress ticket during last year's Assembly elections allegedly at the behest of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, but contested and won as an Independent candidate from Gambegre constituency in the West Garo Hills district.
"The head of the government has also claimed there are enough evidences to prove the prevalence of a politico-militant nexus in the state, but till date no action in this regard has been initiated," Saleng said, seeking an immediate CBI probe.
Earlier this month, a 35-year-old woman's head was blown off for resisting an alleged molestation and rape attempt by the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants.
Last week, a bank official was abducted but was rescued by security forces. There are around a dozen militant groups operating in the Garo Hills at this point of time crippling normal life, the MLA said.
