"It has come to the notice of the police that some unscrupulous persons are calling public randomly over mobile phone claiming to be functionaries/employees of Reliance Communication or other service providers for setting up mobile towers," SP City Vivek Syiem said in a statement.
He said these criminals first asked the persons whether they had any land available for setting up of mobile tower and documents for verification, including PAN card.
Several people have fallen prey to such criminals and payments of Rs 20,000 to Rs 1 lakh were demanded as security deposits for the contract, the SP said.
"All steps are being taken by the police to nab the culprits and book them as per law," he said adding that the advisory was issued to ensure that the public were not cheated.
