"We have approved the proposal for the creation of three centres of excellence in the existing polytechnics in Shillong in East Khasi Hills, Tura in West Garo Hills, and Jowai in West Jaintia Hills District," Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said after a cabinet meeting.
He said it was designed to address the shortfall in the state's human development index and create an enabling environment for investment in the manufacturing sector.
The project was proposed by an MNC, Parametric Technology India Ltd (PTC) under its Academic Grant Initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility component and it would bear 90 per cent cost for the implementation of the project.
"Of total Rs 481.68 crore, Rs 160.56 crore will be allotted for each of the polytechnics for setting up of the centres," Sangma said.
Deputy Chief Minister holding education portfolio RC Laloo said, "The capacity intake is around 2500 seats per centre."
Initially the programme will be for three years and will subsequently continue for 10 years, he said adding with the completion of the courses, the students would be considered as industry ready.
