Tamil Nadu government today told the Madras High Court that the memorial for legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan would be completed by October 31, 2016, as per the schedule submitted to the Supreme Court.
Additional Advocate General P H Arvind Pandiyan and Advocate General A L Somayaji, who appeared before the division bench, comprising Justices Satish K Agnihotri and K K Sasidharan, submitted a copy of the November 16, 2015 order of the apex court before which the state government had submitted a time schedule on its construction, stating that it would be completed by that date.
The matter relates to a contempt petition filed by one P N Srinivasan, stating that the SC's January 23, 2014 order was not complied with with regard to removing the statue from a main road junction here to the proposed memorial in Adayar area.
The state government had on September 16, 2015 informed the court that it would take two years to build the proposed memorial for the late Tamil actor and till then his statue would remain at its existing location on beach road.
The HC had on October 14, 2015 directed the government to submit a compliance report by November 16 which prompted the state government to move the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court, while recording the time schedule, had said in its order that no further time extension would be granted in the matter and had remitted it back to the HC.
When the matter came up before the bench today, the AAG and AG informed it of the above details.
The Bench recorded the submissions and directed the state government to file a compliance report by the first week of December, 2016.
