Mercury dips in most places in North; UP simmers

In the national capital Delhi, the maximum temperature dropped to 41.6 degrees Celsius from yesterday's 42.7 degrees Celsius and the minimum to 30.5 degrees Celsius from 32.5 degrees.

In Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, the maximum temperatures settled around the normal level at many places.

Chandigarh recorded a maximum of 39.8 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal but a degree down since yesterday, the MeT office said.

In Punjab, Amritsar (42.4 deg C), Ludhiana (41 deg C) and Patiala (41.5 deg C) experienced a hot day, but the maximums hovered around the normal level.

Ambala in Haryana registered a high of 41.6 degrees Celsius, while Hisar and Rohtak recorded a maximum of 41.7 degrees Celsius and 42 degrees Celsius respectively.

Dust storms or thunder showers with light rains are likely to occur at isolated places in the two states during the next two days, the MeT office said.

Large parts of Uttar Pradesh, however, reeled under intense heat wave conditions which continued unabated in the eastern and western regions of the state.

Banda was the hottest place in the state recording 46.2 degrees Celsius.

Agra and Kanpur sizzled at 45.5 degrees Celsius, while Jhansi recorded 45.2 degrees Celsius, Bahraich and Sultanpur 43 degrees Celsius and Lucknow 42.9 degrees Celsius.

The temperature was appreciably above normal in Varanasi, Faizabad, Allahabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad, Agra and Meerut divisions. MORE
