Metal stocks continued to reel under pressure falling by up to 5.4 per cent, amid downturn in China and depressed commodity prices the world over.
Shares of Vedanta declined by 5.43 per cent, National Aluminium Company Ltd was down 3.99 per cent and Tata Steel lost 3.87 per cent on BSE.
Similarly, Hindalco slipped 3.54 per cent, JSW Steel was down 2.95 per cent, NMDC (2.19 per cent), Steel Authority of India Ltd (2.13 per cent) and Hindustan Zinc (2 per cent).
With losses in these scrips, the BSE metal index lost 1.45 per cent to 6,611.32.
Concerns over economic slowdown in China, the biggest consumer of commodities, and currency devaluation there have hurt the investors' sentiment.
Global cues also remained largely negative on anaemic global growth conditions amid a downturn in China.
The stock market benchmark Sensex went up by 161.82 points to 25,778.66 at close.
