The Liberty City, the hometown of Jenkins and playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, inspired the moving story of a boy struggling to come to terms with his sexuality while growing up in impoverished black community.
According to the Miami New Times, a stretch of Miami-Dade County's Liberty City will be named "Moonlight Way," giving a nod to the inner city neighborhood that both Jenkins and McCraney called home and served as the backdrop for their personal memoirs intertwined in the coming-of-age film.
The movie is adapted from McCraney's play 'In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue'.
"Moonlight" also won the best supporting actor Oscar for Mahershala Ali and the best adapted screenplay for Jenkins and McCraney, from a total of eight nominations.
