Migration from the existing tax system to the proposed GST, coming into force from July one, was very satisfactory in West Bengal, Bijay Kumar, principal commissioner of service tax of Kolkata commissionerate said.
As per CBEC data migration from service tax by the existing taxpayers to the new regime was as high as 91 per cent in West Bengal, Kumar told PTI.
As regards migration from sales tax, central excise and VAT was concerned, it was at the all-India average of 86 per cent.
"It seems that the taxpayers in West Bengal are ready for GST. The large corporates are absolutely ready," he said adding the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) might be facing some problems and are likely to catch up.
For the SMEs, GST Network had provided the licensed software 'SUVIDHA' which could come of help to these taxpayers.
Earlier at a CII session here today, Kumar said that GST would be an efficient and technology-driven tax system.
The GST Council will sort out the challenges regarding the rates, he said.
"Dual GST in India will consist of Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). In place of Central Sales Tax (CST) there will be IGST which will be known as Integrated Tax,", Kumar said.
