The all important goal came in the 42nd minute of the match after Dempo's playmaker Stephen Fernandes was brought down by PIFA keeper Karun Kumar inside the box and referee Fasi Salahudeen awarded the penalty for Dempo.
Milagres Gonsavles stepped up to send the ball to the right of the keeper to put Dempo into the lead.
Dempo, who controlled the proceeding in the first half, could have led by at least three goals but their strikers failed to cash in on the chances that came their way. Veliton Cruz was twice unlucky as his effort hit the woodwork.
PIFA, who were most of the time seen defending their citadel, did come up with some moves, which were mostly confined to midfield.
