The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters, say militants launched the attacks today afternoon near the restive town of Sheikh Zuweid.

The military says that multi-checkpoint assault killed at least 17 soldiers. Officials from several branches of Egypt's security forces previously told The Associated Press that the attack killed dozens more.
