Police had set up a check-point in the area yesterday evening following intelligence inputs about movement of some militants around 7.00 PM at Baghat Kanipora area, they said.
The driver of the car ignored the 'stop' signal and kept moving while the militant sitting in the back seat opened firing with pistol and hurled a grenade at the police party.
Police are on the lookout for a 'white Maruti 800 car', in which the militants were travelling.
The incident took place an hour before militants shot at and injured a sarpanch in Bomai village of northern Kashmir Sopore township.
Security across Kashmir Valley has been beefed up in view of the 'Darbar Move', which would begin here next week.
Darbar Move is a century-old practice under which the Civil Secretariat, the seat of the state government, functions in Srinagar for six summer months and in Jammu for remaining part of the year.
