The demand was made by Pradesh Congress General Secretary Anand Rawat through a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Harish Rawat here yesterday.
Citing the examples of Maharashtra and Karnataka where the minimum age for alcohol consumption is 25 and 21 years respectively, Anand said the minimum age for alcohol consumption in Uttarakhand should also be raised from 18 to 21 years.
It will save the younger generation of the state from falling a victim to alcoholism at a tender age, he said.
The PCC general secretary also asked the Chief Minister to ask Uttarakhand police to expand its anti-drug campaign named "Nayi Zindagi" (new life) currently underway in Dehradun to other districts of the state.
