Talking to reporters at the Gondwana University here, where he inaugurated a workshop, Dr Kakodkar said efforts were needed to bridge the gap between the electricity demand and supply. Apart from nuclear energy, solar and wind energy could also be alternative sources, he added.
When asked about the apprehensions about safety of nuclear plants in the wake of the situation witnessed at Fukushima, Japan, Kakodkar pointed out that not a single life was lost due the dysfunctioning reactors there.
He also maintained that nuclear cooperation pacts entered into by India with USA did not harm national interests. "We could not expand our nuclear reactors due to lack of uranium. The agreements will solve this problem," he said.
