In a gruesome incident, a group of armed miscreants chopped off both hands of a youth at a village in Odisha's Balangir district today, police said.
The victim, identified as Khirod Mishra, was attacked by a group of about 20 persons who cut off both his hands with sharp weapons at Raghavpali village near here, said Inspector In-charge of Sadar police station, Ananda Majhi.
On getting information, police personnel rushed to the village and sent Mishra to the hospital for treatment. His condition was stated to be critical, the police said.
Old rivalry between two groups was suspected to be the reason behind the incident, the IC said adding, the attackers have fled the village after committing the crime and efforts were on to nab them.
Many of the miscreants who attacked Mishra today were arrested in connection with another case and were released on bail a few days ago, police said.
Tension prevailed in the area after the incident and police maintained a close watch.
