Five miscreants entered the UCO Bank branch shortly after it opened for the day and threatened the staff and customers at gun point before grabbing the strong room keys to commit the crime, they said.
"Around Rs 13 lakh cash and some gold jewellery were taken away by the dacoits. The incident took place between 9.30 am and 10.30 am. Five armed miscreants were seen by people," Commissioner of Police, Y B Khurania, said.
There was no security guard at the bank and the alarm system apparently could not be pressed in time, both Khurania and bank's branch manager, Abhimanyu Behera said.
Special teams have been formed as part of efforts to nab the miscreants, and a scientific squad thoroughly examined the site, Khurania said.
The police in neighbouring areas have been alerted and vehicles are being searched, he said.
The miscreants, who were speaking in Hindi, threatened and physically assaulted some of the bank staff and customers, the bank manager said.
