Pandit Rajan-Sajan Mishra held the audiences here in thrall with their soulful rendition of raga Puriya Dhanashree as Virasat, a major event in Uttarakhand's cultural calendar, got off to a start at Dr Ambedkar Stadium here.
"For us singing and worshipping are not different. Every time we perform, we feel we are offering prayers in a temple," Rajan Mishra said before the foremost Banaras gharana exponents began their performance on Friday.
Singing with great pause the duo stayed in the lower octave long enough to define the sombre character of the sundown raga.
The mood of the twilight hour when daytime mobility is drawing to a close was captured well by the Mishra brothers as they sang in perfect co-ordination improvising and embellishing every phrase in a slow paced 'Vilambit'.
The transition to 'drut' (fast) through intricate and fast paced 'taans' was spontaneous and smooth as befits singers of their stature.
They also regretted coming to perform at the event after a long gap.
The fortnight long event will also witness the likes of Sitar maestro Shujat Khan and celebrated khyal exponent of Mewati gharana Sanjiv Abhyankar regale the audiences in Dehradun over the next few days.
