Miss Universe Olivia Frances Culpo today underlined the importance of maintaining right to privacy of the donor as well as that of a surrogate mother by involving a third party agency.
However, surrogacy in the country has to be looked into in its context, she said participating in a discussion here on complexities and challenges of third party reproduction in India.
Culpo, who was clad in a traditional red Assamese 'Mekhela Chador', said she has seen the benefits of surrogacy first hand with a close acquaintance having benefited from it in India.
"I am very happy that my dear friend was able to have the much wanted and loved baby through the help of surrogacy. I understand that this is the last hope for many and it talks of the excellence of medical practice in India that so many families around the world give India this sacred trust," she added.
The function, organised by INSTAR (Indian Society for Third Party Assisted Reproduction), NF Railway Women's Welfare Organisation (NFRWWO) and Frontier TV, was also attended by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who emphasised on concerted efforts for protection of the girl child.
"Society must play a proactive role in saving the girl child and nursing them. The decline in sex ratio in the country was a matter of serious concern and there is an urgent need to reverse the trend," he added.
He appreciated Miss Universe for taking up the cause of the girl child and thanked her for coming to the North East.
