Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said amendments to the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act would be executed when BJP comes to power at the Centre.
"When BJP comes to power and Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister after the coming elections, we will amend the MMDR Act, allowing the mining leases to be auctioned," Parrikar told the House during the Question Hour.
Congress legislator Aleixo Reginald had tabled the question seeking to know the legal provision to cancel iron ore mining leases which are not operational for a long period of time.
The Chief Minister said those leases which are not renewed gets deemed renewal as per the law.
He said the law needs to be changed but it is the Centre's prerogative and amendments will be made once NDA comes to power.
Responding to another question, Parrikar said the state government has already begun the process of converting the land used for dumping the ore from agricultural to non-agricultural purpose.
He claimed 70 per cent of these dumps are on the privately-owned land while 30 per cent is on government land.
Parrikar said those dumps which remain unclaimed for the conversion purpose would be taken over by the government and auctioned.
