A mob today set ablaze a vehicle belonging to an aide of PDP MP Nazir Ahmad Laway in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, prompting police to fire tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
A group of 40 to 50 persons started pelting stones towards the venue of an event attended by Rajya Sabha member Laway at Bugam in Kulgam at 2.30 PM, a police officer said.
He said the MP, who was in the area for distributing sports kit among students of a local higher secondary school, was whisked away to safety by his security personnel.
"However, the miscreants set ablaze a vehicle belonging to PDP worker Mubarak Ahmad," the officer said.
He said police fired tear gas shells and used batons to chase away the protesters.
Earlier in the day, a police vehicle was set ablaze by a mob in Rohama area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
A police team went to the village after receiving reports about a dispute over water supply pipe between two groups of villagers.
However, the villagers started pelting stones at the police prompting the law enforcing agency to fire a few rounds in air, the officer said.
He said as the police vehicle was trying to leave the spot, a 45-year-old civilian, Abdul Rashid Dar, was by hit by the vehicle and got injured. He was hospitalised at Bone and Joint Hospital here.
After the accident, a mob set ablaze the police vehicle but the policemen managed to escape unhurt, the officer said.
Intermittent clashes between the protesters and police were going on for several hours, he said, adding cases have been registered and investigation started in both the cases.
