The deceased, Vinod Kumar, a two-wheeler dealer, was shot dead by six motorcycle borne assailants near Kharihani village when he was coming from Azamgarh, SP Shiv Hri Meena said.
Kumar was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said.
The angry local residents went on rampage and torched a roadways bus and police outpost after which the police had to use force to disperse the agitated mob.
An FIR has been registered, the police said, adding a few people have been detained.
