As part of the month-long Cancer Awareness program, beginning today, city-based Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR) has come out with its novel campaign by launching a mobile mammography unit, claimed to be the first in and around the region.
The unit will travel to main destinations of Nilgirs, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Karur districts, where women would be screened by free mammogram, Dr P Guhan, Director, SRIOR, told reporters on the sidelines of the launch.
This would not only screen women, but emphasise on breast screening among the women of every region it visits, he said.
The institute had launched an interactiver Android application for a complete information on breast cancer last year, Guhan said, adding, it was now now decided to bring out an IOS (iPhone Operating System) Platform to enable more and more people to access information on breast cancer.
Asked about the increase in breast cancer incidents, he said it was doubled since last two years which was 26 out of one lakh women then and even it was found that lactating women or breast feeding women were prone to breast cancer.
During the campaign, about 2,500 NSS students in Bharathiar University will distribute two lakh pamphlets on breast cancer awareness to the public in these districts.
It was also proposed to conduct screening campaign among women police and also those in other force, like CRPF, Guhan said.
