Around 40 youngsters from Gujarat among other Indians are reportedly trapped in Angola, after they went on strike in Sumbe cement plant located in that country for not being paid six month wages and had to face police bullets and ire.

Expressing concerns over the safety of these industrial workers in Angola, Modi in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appealed him to ensure their safety.

Gohil appealed to External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and the Indian Embassy in Angola to provide help to these youths at the earliest.

He met the family of one Vijay Chimanbhai Valmiki at Petlad in Anand district here.

Vijay was taken to Africa with the promise of a salary of Rs 32,000 per month. Satishbhai Marfat, a Vadodara-based agent of ETA Star International had sent youths from Gujarat to Africa, he said.

The agitating Indian workers at the industrial site in Angola were reportedly lured by a Chennai-based firm with a promise of higher wages and had to face police's ire there when they demanded pending wages of six months.

Police had reportedly opened fire at them, beat them, and put a few in jail, while others had to take shelter in nearby forests, sources said.
