Congress president Rahul Gandhi today alleged mediapersons were being "suppressed" under the BJP's watch and assured his party would defend them even if the media attacked the Grand Old party like it did for 70 years.
Our friends from the press are here. They are being suppressed (in the present regime). But they will speak up in two-three months, the entire country will speak up, Gandhi said, while launching the Congress's Save the Constitution' campaign.
The campaign aims to highlight alleged attacks on the Constitution and atrocities against Dalits under the present regime.
Gandhi suggested that there was a difference between the Congress and the BJP governments when it came to protecting members of the media. The Congress governments protected the media even though it attacked, wrote against them.
A press person has asked me a question, I will answer it...Now you (the journalist) do me a favour. When Mr Narendra Modi is speaking, you go and ask him a question. They will pick you up and throw you out of the room. That is the difference between us and them, Gandhi added.
Gandhi had also talked about protecting the press at the Congress's 84th plenary session held here last month.
