Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray today said the Maharashtra government's decision to hold this year's monsoon session of state legislature in Nagpur instead of Mumbai hints at a possibility of early polls.

As per convention, monsoon session is held in Mumbai and winter session in Nagpur.

"The BJP is keen on holding the monsoon session in Nagpur because the party is planning early polls in December instead of May 2019 as per the timetable so that they may announce some package and perks," a Sena leader said.

In a departure from convention, the monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature will be held in Nagpur from July 4 to July 20.

The schedule was finalised in the meetings of the Business Advisory Committees of both houses today.

Nagpur, the second capital of Maharashtra, hosts the winter session of the state legislature every year while monsoon and budget sessions are held in Mumbai.

The speculations about the early polls have been doing rounds since many weeks.

Last assembly elections were held in October 2014 in Maharashtra.

A sizable group of farmers who cultivate Rabi crops would be busy in sowing so there will be little unrest against the government, said a political observer on the possibility of early polls.

As compared to summer, winter is bearable in Maharashtra where overall sentiment is not against the government, he said.
