Delhi Police have told a court here that suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Tehseen Akhtar and his top associate Zia-Ur-Rehman had visited Jaipur and Jodhpur a "few months back" to give training to three members of the terror outfit about explosive devices.
In its plea seeking the remand of Pakistani national Waqas, arrested outside Ajmer Railway Station on March 22, Special Cell of Delhi Police said Waqas had gone to Rajasthan to "assign" tasks to arrested accused -- Mohd Mahruf, Mohd Waqar Azhar, alias Haneef, and Shaquib Ansari, alias Khalid -- to carry out terror attacks.
"A few months back, he (Waqas), along with Monu, visited Jaipur and Jodhpur and imparted IED (improvised explosive device) manufacturing training to three members of IM namely Shaquib, Mahruf and Waqar for carrying out terror activities ...He (Waqas) was going to Jaipur for assigning these members the task of carrying out terror activities," it said.
The claim by the special cell assumes significance as Akhtar, one of the most wanted men blamed for a number of terror strikes in the country, has been arrested days after Waqas and other three accused were apprehended.
According to the police, Akhtar was heading IM after the arrest of Yasin Bhatkal, co-founder of the terror outfit.
The four accused -- Waqas, Shaquib, Mahruf and Waqar -- were produced before Additional Sessions Judge Daya Prakash after being arrested from Rajasthan on March 22 and March 23 respectively and they have been remanded to police custody for interrogation till April 2.
The police, in its remand plea, also said Waqas had met Yasin on the instruction of Riyaz Bhatkal, a top member of IM who is now based in Pakistan.
