"Additional forces have been sent to the area to defuse any tension and also to ensure that no illegal construction activity is carried out by encroachers in the site," Kamrup Rural Deputy Commissioner, S K Roy told PTI.

Roy, along with SP Partha Sarathi Mahanta, visited the site today to take stock of the situation. They told locals that the administration in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district had assured to put a stay on all construction activity in the area.

Assam-Meghalaya Border Suraksha Samiti had in March organised a 500-hour road blockade against alleged encroachment by Meghalaya on land claimed by Assam.

Locals also alleged that government sign boards in the area had been vandalised by the encroachers to put up new sign boards identifying the area as being located in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
