More than 50,000 police personnel, paramilitary for TL polls

More than 50,000 police personnel of Telangana police, besides central paramilitary forces, have been deployed to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of the Lok Sabha polls, a top police official said here Monday.

These forces would be in place in 33 districts as part of bandobust for the polls, he said.

"We are working on the Election Commission guidelines and our effort is to see that elections are conducted in a free, fair, peaceful manner and without any incident," Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Jitender told reporters here.

There are a total of 34,667 polling stations in Telangana, with 6,394 identified as critical.

Jitender said special security arrangements are being made for Left Wing Extremist (LWE) areas bordering Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.

Five constituencies have been identified as sensitive to LWE, he said.

"Combing operations and area domination exercises are being carried out extensively to prevent untoward incidents in these areas State and Central security forces have been also been deployed.

Adequate measures are being taken," he said, adding poll boycott call by Maoists for several decades had found no support from people in successive elections.

Reacting to a query, Jitender said security cover has been enhanced for Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee working president A Revanth Reddy, contesting from Malkajgiri in view of the threat perception and on his representation.

A total of 8,394 licensed weapons have been deposited, he said.

Air Ambulance and helicopters are being arranged in consultation withTelangana Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumarfor any contingency, he said.

Police have so far seized Rs 7.22 crore in cash besides over 14,000 liters of liquor, Jitenderadded.
