The Supreme Court has been informed that most of the demands of CBI relating to its financial and functional autonomy have been resolved.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice R M Lodha which was hearing the coalgate matter was told by Attorney General G E Vahanvati that several of CBI's grievances have been resolved.
"We have fully resolved its grievances. The CBI director can directly take his proposals to the secretary, DoPT and thereafter to the minister," Vahanvati had said adding that some of the grievances were at the stage of discussion and the court would be apprised about them shortly.
When contacted, senior advocate Amrendra Sharan, who is appearing for the CBI, said "Efforts are on to resolve the contentious demand to grant ex-officio power of secretary to CBI director and allow him to report directly to the minister- in-charge."
"Among the issues still remaining to be resolved is about the CBI director being granted the status of ex-officio power of secretary," Sharan said.
Another advocate associated with the agency said that minutes of the meetings between the competent authorities on resolving the issues raised by CBI is yet to get the nod of the ministry concerned.
Sharan said the Centre has already taken decision to grant financial autonomy and empowered the CBI director to appoint public prosecutor to handle its cases.
