Move to shift college: hartal in 3 villages;black flags put up
Press Trust of India Erode : A total hartal was observed in three villages in the district today with all houses hoisting black flags and shops remaining shut in protest against the Tamil Nadu government's move to shift an arts college from Sivagiri to Elamuthur, about 10 km away.
Villagers of Sivagiri, 40 km from here, said the college was started in 2012 and government had now decided to shift it to Elamuthur on a huge plot of land
Opposing the move, the villagers, as also those from nearby Chinniyampalyam and Ammankoil hoisted black flags and closed down all 2000 and odd shops.
They demanded that the government construct the college on the 100 acre land belonging to the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board.
But Revenue officials and Higher education department officials said taking of such land was a problem and that the present plot at Elumathur was feasible for all students to attend the college without any difficulty.
