"These days most media establishments, whether electronic or print, is owned by people who do not know anything about journalism and have no stake in it," the chief minister said at a seminar here.

Chouhan said that journalism in the country had gone through four phases since the days of the freedom struggle.

The first phase, he said, was during the freedom struggle, when people like Mahatma Gandhi and Makhanlal Chaturvedi brought out newspapers due to nationalist zeal.

The chief minister said that second phase was immediately after independence when newspapers worked for building the nation.

Chouhan said the third phase was during the period between 1975 and 1977 when Emergency was declared and newspapers carried blank editorials to protest against government censorship.

He said that we are now witnessing the fourth phase today where business houses run media establishments purely for profit.
