The farmers have been protesting in Mandsuar district of Madhya Pradesh for over a week demanding debt relief. The protest got violent on June 6 as five farmers died in police firing. The situation is still tense in the region.
"The Madhya Pradesh incident is unfortunate. Those politicising the issue do not want welfare of farmers and the country," Singh tweeted.
The Agriculture Minister's tweet comes hours after Congress vice President Rahul Gandhi was detained when he tried to visit Mandsuar to meet the affected family members. He was later released.
Singh had yesterday cancelled a press conference on the government's cleanliness drive apparently to avoid possible questions on the farmers' agitation. The briefing on the cabinet decisions on Kharif crop MSP was also cancelled.
Despite bumper crops, farmers in many states are in distress because of sharp fall in prices in both domestic and global market.
